(6) A Dragon Among Humans

Monday. I really, really hate Monday. The fact that I'm going to school as a completely different creature didn't really help at all. Still, I have a rather large breakfast, but I ate in fear.

"What's wrong? Nobody is going to hurt you. I mean, you're a dragon!" Mom told me.

"Sure I am, but inside, I'm still just a typical high schooler." I responded. Also I heard a familiar sound down the street. "Also, did I miss the bus?"

"Oh crap! I take my eyes off the clock and this happens! Sorry!" Mom panicked.

"Don't worry, I have a solution." I said, and spread my wings.

"Are you sure?" Mom is skeptical of my flying skills. I can't say I'm good at it yet, but I'm getting there.

"I'll be fine. I mean, I'm a dragon." I said, mocking Mom.

"Okay, be careful" Mom told me. I nodded, grabbed my backpack, went outside, and flew to school.


I flew to the school. It was a rather long flight, the longest I've done actually. As I landed, which wasn't pretty but successful, I immediately put my hood up and went in the school. As I walked to the school I felt stares coming at me from all directions. I saw Kody in the corner of the cafeteria, and went to him.

"Man, you look distraught." Kody told me.

"Yeah," I said. "Is everybody staring at me?" I asked Kody. I couldn't bring myself to show my face to the growing number of people in the cafeteria.

"Yeah, every single one of them. Don't worry, you're not alone. You've got me." Kody said.

"Thanks, I really need it." I said, then the warning bell rang, indicating its time to go to first period.

"I'm walking with you" Kody said.

"Thanks." I said. I don't think I could survive without Kody right now.

Kody and I awkwardly walked to the first class of the day. Normally, the halls would be louder than a rock concert, but today it's dead silent. I guess it's because of me. As we walked, I felt a sharp pain in my tail.

"Arg!" I snarled.

"Who stepped on his tail?" Kody demanded. Everybody in the crowd looked at a jock right behind me.

"Look, all I want is to go through school. Don't make things harder for me." I sternly told the jock and gave him a death stare. Everybody thought I must be mute, because there were loud gasps when I told down the jock. Kody and I then resumed our walk to my first period class.

"Thanks, Kody." I told him.

"No problem. I gotta go to my class, seeya." Kody said

"Seeya" I said, then walked into the math room. I sat in the back corner so my wings won't block people's view. The bell rang, and Mrs. Crawford began to speak.

"First of all, I know who's sitting in the back. It's someone you have already known for a while." Mrs. Crawford said.

A girl raised her hand. "Who is it?"

"Drake. Drake Bryan." I said.

"What happened, man?" A guy asked me.

"I looked in a cave. Picked up a strange object, now here I am." I said. I really don't want to say the same story over and over again. "Can we begin class, Mrs. Crawford? I  really don't want to talk about it."

"Sure thing, mister. Today, we'll be learning about parameterizations. Now, in order to find the parameterizations..."

Class continued as normal, and the bell rang. My second period class is English, and I really hope I don't get a textbook to my muzzle again. As I walked in the classroom, I felt the stares come. I'm already getting used to this feeling of stares coming on me. I took a seat in the back row again, amid the stares.

"Hello class, welcome back! Now, to start the day, I want you to write a two page story about your winter break." The whole class groaned. I did too, but it came out more of a growl, and everybody in the room looked at me.

"Sorry." Was all I can say. I didn't write about about the time I transformed, because I don't really want to remember the all the pains I went through.

The next class is history. I am a history nut, and the teacher, Mr. Palluqtuq, really likes me, at least in my human form. Although he has seen the new me the previous day, I am still unsure about how he is going to react to me. I took a seat in the back again, and the class is waiting for Mr. Palluqtuq to come into the room. He then came in as the bell rang.

"Alright, class! Welcome back! What did y'all do during the break?" Mr. Palluqtuq welcomed. A boy raised his hand.

"What are you going to do about this thing back here?" He asked. I had to restrain myself from saying something.

"Nothing." Mr. Palluqtuq said, glaring at the boy. "If you have a problem with him or anyone else, keep it to yourself. Nothing makes me madder than bullying, you understand?"

"But he could kill somebody!" Said the boy again.

"And so could I! See me after class, Fritz."

We learned about the Middle Ages in Europe, and ironically learned about the importance of dragons to medieval art. Soon, class was over soon. Well, not for Fritz and I.

"Don't worry, Drake, you're not in trouble." Mr. Palluqtuq reassured me. Then he pointed to Fritz. "You, however, are in trouble. I want you to apologize to Drake, he's been through a lot lately."

Fritz gave me a bittersweet apology, and received a detention by Mr. Palluqtuq

"I'm sorry for what happened to you today." Mr. Palluqtuq told me.

"That's okay, I expected it." I said.

"I just want to let you know that I have your back if anything happens to you."

"You mean my wings?" We both laughed hard. I've gained a lot of respect for Mr. Palluqtuq that day.


Next period, I have lunch. As a human, I loved the lunch period, because I can talk to Kody and Jason all period. However, as a dragon, I dreaded lunch. The cafeteria is a giant room, and hundreds of kids eat in this room. If a few dozen students in the halls is enough to bother me, there's no telling how bad hundreds of students is going to be. On top of that, Kody and Jason have different lunch periods this semester, so I'm on my own.

I waited in line for lunch, while looking at the floor. I could feel intense stares, and the there is quite some distance between the kids in front of me and behind me. Nevertheless, I got my lunch, which is some pizzas and water, and sat in the corner table of the cafeteria that no one is using. I ate my lunch as normal, when all of a sudden a kid sat in front of me, looking scared.

"Uh, hey." The kid said.

"Hey." I responded. "Is something wrong?"

The kid is breathing heavily, in fear.

"If you don't feel comfortable, you don't have to sit here." I told him.

"I-I can't. I-I'm dared."

"Oh, you're playing truth or dare right? Okay then." I then ate my pizza. "Man, I'm still hungry."

"No, don't eat me please!" The boy pleaded.

I was very confused. "Uh... that's not what I meant... I'm getting seconds." I stood up to get another pizza.

When I returned to the table, the kid was still there. I was really curious about him.

"Hey, what's your name?" I asked.

"Dylan. And you're Drake, right?" Dylan responded.

"Yes, how'd you know?"

"Last week, a rumor went around that you're a dragon. I've never imagined that to be true, though."

I chuckled. "White Lake High School rumors are always stupid, but sometimes they're true."

"Of course!" Dylan said. We were both laughing. But then Dylan got his more serious face back on.

"How'd you become like this?"

I then told the story to Dylan.

"Man, that sounds harsh." Dylan said.

"Yeah, I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. I mean, yeah, I can fly and not feel cold and whatnot, but I just don't feel like a part of this world. It hurts a lot, makes the past a lot more nostalgic." I said.

"Well, you make a better friend than these guys over there." Dylan pointed to a group of jocks a few tables away. "I guess I learned to not judge a book by it's cover, after all."

Dylan held out his hand, and I shook it with my claws.

"Thanks for seeing through these scales, Dylan." I said, then the bell rang indicating its time to go to the next class. My next class is biology, which should be interesting.

I walked to my biology class. Unlike the other classrooms, the desks in biology can be used by two people. Fortunately, Jason is sitting next to me.

"So how did your day go?" Jason asked me.

"Weird." Was the only thing I can say.

So, the biology teacher's name is Miss Ellen, and she is everybody's favorite teacher. She is smart, funny, and very easy to approach. When she took attendance, she ignored the fact that I turned into a dragon, which is actually very pleasing to me.

"Okay, class, welcome back from break! Did anyone have a good time?" She introduced, in which the entire class said yes.

"Great! Now, we're going to learn about taxonomy. Now, does anyone know what class we are in?"

"Biology?" said one of the kids, followed by laughters.

"Very funny. On a taxonomic note we are in a class called Mammalia, in other words, mammals." Miss Ellen said. A kid raised her hand.

"What about this guy in the back? He's not a mammal, right?" The girl said, pointing at me.

"I don't know too much about, uh, dragons, but I'm quite sure he is of the class Reptilia." Miss Ellen said. I raised my claws.

"I know I'm a bit different, but, can you please not make me an example? It bothers me." I asked.

"Okay, I won't do it again, Drake." She said. She then went on to teach taxonomy, which bored the students to sleep until the bell rang, signaling the end of the day.

As I was walking toward the exit, I noticed that I don't have a ride home, and I nearly panicked until I realized I have wings. Upon realizing I have wings, an idea came across me. As I left the school, I walked out onto the snow covered lawn, and took off from the school in front of a crowd of students. Hey, this ain't so bad. I thought.
